Pavement Design

The apron area utilizes a rigid concrete pavement because of the corrosive chemicals associated with airplanes. Concrete provides a  more durable pavement but at a premium cost. This correlates with a longer life span when compared to asphalt.

The runway taxiways system uses asphalt instead of concrete primarily due to cost. The runway does not see as much corrosive chemicals as the apron and therefore concrete is not required. The cost of asphalt is significantly lower than that of concrete and will be reflected in the cost estimation.
